ABSTRATC: This paper reports on a field, cross-sectional, and inferential study aiming at sorting out the internal and external
causes for the proliferation of street children as seen by the community, and at ascertaining whether perception
of the problem by women is similar to that of men. Six hundred and two people were given a questionnaire in the
four main cities of the state of Anzoátegui, Venezuela, in August 2005. Their responses were assessed using a
principal component analysis by Varimax factor rotation. The results suggest that causes external to the family
setting, such as unemployment, exploitation of minors, and migration from the countryside, among others, prevail
over the internal causes of the problem, an assertion which is mostly adhered to by women.
