Estudio iconográfico y acercamiento iconológico a las imágenes impresas de María Cano

This is a study about how the image of María Cano Márquez (an important social activist of the early twentieth century) has been constructed through the use of her portraits and representations in drawings and other graphic media. The concern arises from the observation of the ways in which her image has changed over the years and how it has become a cultural construction that takes advantage of her life and performance as a union leader, that responds to the interests of the people or entities that make use of it. The contribution presented in this work refers to the way in which the images of the portraits taken by María Cano varies through photographic editing and the use of new editing technologies in order to create new messages and presentations. It is analyzed how photographer Melitón Rodríguez takes photos of María Cano in her youth, photographs that were taken at a time when photography was developing in Colombia. These images are used later, with the help of editing, to create the image of a woman who was a leader in her time but who gradually become an almost sacred being: "the red virgin". An example to be followed by militants from different left parties, feminist organizations, trade unions and a prominent character for some mass media. On the other hand, the cartoonist Ricardo Rendón with the help of the image of María Cano, establishes a milestone in the history of the political caricature: its images help to change the course of power, leading the way for the liberal government over the conservative hegemony that had dominated the country for many years. María Cano de Rendón does not appear directly represented, but the power of her name and its importance at the time were enough to strike opinion blows with the cartoons published on the cover of the newspaper El Tiempo of Bogotá.
