Resumen
Thanks to the commercial value of crystals in jewelry, it was proposed to study the
necessary conditions to crystallize the double salt of potassium sulfate and
chromium (III), which is a violet substance of octahedral shape. To understand the
process of obtaining nuclei, it was planned to study the initial relationship of the
reactants and the presence of Fe, Na in the mother water, in the shape or size of the
obtained nuclei. Some of the nuclei obtained were grown in the mother liquors at 5
° C, 25 ° C and 35 ° C, seeking to know the operating temperature of the
crystallization process. After obtaining cores and crystals of different sizes; Between
200μm and 5cm in length, and different geometries, scratch tests were carried out,
which allowed to classify them between 2-3 according to the Mohs scale, the solid
samples were observed through a 10x, 40x and 100x optical microscope, and the
scanning electron microscope (SEM) between 20-200 μm, the Fourier transform
infrared transmission spectroscopy (FTIR) was read between 930-800cm-1 with the
presence of chromates and sulphates close to 1200cm-1 and in atomic absorption
spectroscopy (EAA)) higher chromium and potassium dissolved in solution than
those with the presence of iron or sodium chloride are recognized. With this study it
was possible to obtain a methodology that allows crystals of potassium sulphate and
chromium (III) to be used in jewelry.
