dc.descriptionA mediados del siglo XIX la falta de mano de obra esclava, corolario de los acuerdos firmados entre España e Inglaterra para prohibir la trata de negros, supuso la implementación de la inmigración china a Cuba. Traídos bajo contrato, como hombres libres para sustituir a los cautivos africanos, los llamados culíes fueron sin embargo, tratados como éstos en múltiples ocasiones. Enmarcado en el debate histórico sobre esclavitud y libertad, el presente trabajo sintetiza la trayectoria de los asiáticos articulando la noción del honor con las estrategias de humanización que utilizaron para resistir contra la servidumbre y escapar de ella.

dc.descriptionIn the second half of the 19th Century, the lack of slave labor, a corollary of the agreements signed between Spain and England to ban the slave trade, involved the implementation of Chinese immigration to Cuba. Brought under contract, as free men to replace the African captives, the so-called coolies were nevertheless treated like these on several occasions. As part of the historical debate over slavery and freedom, this paper summarizes the history of Asian articulating the notion of honor with the strategies of humanization used to resist slavery and as an escape.
