Toda investigación histórica debe partir de la localización de la historiografía precedente y de la crítica correspondiente para considerar el estado actual del tema que se investiga en cuanto a su significado histórico, así como la valoración del aporte hecho por distintos autores y las limitaciones teóricas y metodológicas para una nueva interpretación. En el caso del Real Colegio Seminario de San Buenaventura de Mérida existen dos versiones historiográficas claramente definidas: la que ha investigado de manera específica su devenir histórico y la que en el tratamiento de otros objetos de estudio han requerido tratar de manera más o menos extensa aspectos de este instituto eclesiástico. Por otro lado, también se advierten dos perspectivas de interpretación acerca de su naturaleza religiosa, su importancia para la ciudad y su relación con el origen de la Universidad de Los Andes. De igual manera, cabe señalar que la mayoría de los estudios asocian el Colegio Seminario exclusivamente con Fray Juan Ramos de Lora, por ser su fundador y primer benefactor, soslayando la labor que realizaron los otros obispos de Mérida, diferentes autoridades eclesiásticas y algunos directivos de ese centro educativo religioso entre 1790 y 1832. Advertir esas características historiográficas es el propósito de este artículo, junto con la intención de develar mitos y realidades hasta ahora ocultas por la mayor parte de los autores que han escrito sobre el seminario colonial y republicano merideño.49-110ali_lopez_ve@yahoo.comEvery historical research must begin with a localization of the precedent historiography and the corresponding critique to consider the current status of the topic that is being researched. This must be done with regards to its historical significance, as well as to the value of the collaboration made by different authors and the theoretical and methodological limitations for a new interpretation. In the case of the Royal Seminary School of San Buenaventura of Mérida there are two clearly defined historiographical versions: the one that has researched in a specific manner its historical development and the one that has required approaching aspects of this ecclesiastic institute in a more or less extensive manner, due to its treatment of other subjects of study. On the other hand, there are also two interpretive perspectives on its religious nature, its importance to the city, and its relationship with the origins of the University of Los Andes. Additionally, it is important to note that the majority of research associate the Seminary School exclusively to Fray Juan Ramos de Lora due to his role as founder and first benefactor, ignoring the work of other bishops of Mérida, different ecclesiastic authorities and some directors of that Educational religious center between 1790 and 1832. The purpose of this article is to highlight these historiographical characteristics, as well as to reveal myths and realities so far hidden by most authors that have written about the Seminary during the Colonial and Republican period in Mérida.
