dc.descriptionEn el contexto de los hechos de la Independencia, se estudian los conflictos entre las elites de Maracaibo y Mérida, por la sede del Obispado, y sus instituciones anexas, entre ellas el Seminario de San Buenaventura. Se trató de un asunto disputado ante la Monarquía española desde finales del siglo XVIII, con la propia erección de la institución, que evidenció las ansias de la ciudad de Maracaibo por consolidar su capitalidad, sin éxito pues el Obispado se instaló en Mérida. No obstante, a partir de 1810 y por el conflicto planteado en la provincia con la adhesión de Mérida al proceso de Independencia y el sostenimiento de la fidelidad política en Maracaibo, las elites de esta ciudad lograron obtener la sede del Obispado provisionalmente. Entre otras cuestiones, procuraron refundar el Seminario, administrativa y académicamente, todo lo cual es el objetivo principal de este artículo.

dc.descriptionWithin the context of independence, here we study the conflicts among the social elites of Maracaibo and Mérida for the bishopric´s seat and its attached institutions; among them the Seminar of St. Bonaventure. This was an issue fought over before the Spanish Monarchy since the end of the 18th century, as the institution itself was created. The issue showed the eagerness of Maracaibo to strengthen its position as a province capital. It didn´t succeed since the Bishopric was finally erected in Mérida. Nevertheless, because of the conflict related to Mérida´s support of the independence process from 1810, and due to Maracaibo´s political loyalty to the crown, the elites of this city obtained the seat of the Bishopric provisionally. Once there, they tried to refound the seminar administratively, as well as academically. All of these subjects are encompassed in this article.
