Kathakali is a dance drama genre from Kerala, India. A form of vocal narration, the sopanam, is the base of the plays. It has not been studied so far in the field of ethnomusicology. The objective of this article is the question of meanings arousing from the interrelation of vocal music, instrumental accompaniment and drama. From the perspective of recent concepts of musical semiotics, music is shown as central in that tradition. The strategy presented here includes the study of the Natyashastra, a music and drama treatise from the 2nd century, and the evolution of kathakali as emerging of previous forms as kutiyattam. Essa forma vocal é denominada sopanam, praticamente ainda não estudada pela etnomusicologia. O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a inter-relação de significados estabelecida entre a música vocal, o acompanhamento instrumental e os recursos de interpretação teatral. Fazendo uso de conceitos recentes da semiótica musical, demonstra-se que a música é central nessa tradição. A estratégia de apresentação do tema inclui o estudo do Natyashastra, tratado de música e dramaturgia do século II, e a evolução do kathakali a partir de formas como o kutiyattam.
