This article deals with songs composed and sung for and by the personages involved in the history of the diaspora of German speaking groups from Central Europe to Brazil in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. These songs are one of the best firsthand sources of this history and provide special and unique insights on how the people who moved from one continent to another perceived and represented themselves, or were led to perceive their situation. Signs of an identity, these songs reflect the situation of origin of the emigrants in the Old World and how they project, understand and construct the place of their dreams and hopes in the New World. The text focuses on the analysis of some of the songs selected from songbooks, specialized literature, and collected in ethnographic research or in loose sheets in historical archives. It investigates the main factors of the conditions, the experiences, and the inter-connections of an ethnic group in South Brazil (the German speaking group, called teuto-brasileiro or generically “Germans”), its social order and culture from its beginning until the modern days.Este artigo aborda canções compostas e entoadas para e pelos personagens envolvidos na história de diáspora de grupos de fala germânica da Europa Central para o Brasil, ocorrida no século XIX até início do século XX. Essas canções são uma das melhores fontes primárias desta história e permitem insights ímpares e especiais para a compreensão de como aquelas pes­soas que se deslocaram de um continente para o outro se percebiam e se representavam ou eram levados a perceber sua situação. Signos de uma identidade, essas canções refletem a situação de origem dos emigrantes no Velho Mundo e como eles projetam, entendem e constroem o lugar de seus sonhos e esperanças no Novo Mundo. Este texto se centra na análise de algumas dessas canções, selecionadas de cancioneiros, de literatura especializada e coletadas em pesquisa etnográfica ou em folhas soltas de arquivos históricos, investigando pontos centrais das condições, experiências e interconexões de um grupo étnico no sul do Brasil (o de fala germânica, denominados teuto-brasileiros ou genericamente “alemães”), sua ordem social e sua cultura desde o início de sua formação até a atualidade
