The current literature on development and competitiveness points out the issues of industrial agglomerations. In this field, in particular, the academic production is rich, wide and diversified as a result of different streams of thoughts. It evolved from distinct windows of observation and perception and translated through singular sets of premises and derived theoretical statements. The researcher can only ignore such distinctiveness at her or his own peril, facing the dangers of misinterpretation of concepts or faulty lines of research. These pitfalls, in turn, can be avoided by sound analytical foundation. This paper is such an attempt and contribution, as it brings to the fore, analytical typologies relevant to the field of studies, such us the contributions of regional economy, the contributions of industrial organization and the institutionalism’ approaches. It shows the relations between competitiveness and these new territorial approaches.As reflexões correntes sobre desenvolvimento e competitividade vêm destacando, na temática regional, as aglomerações produtivas. Nesta área, em particular, a literatura é ampla e diversificada, resultante de diferentes vertentes de reflexões. O desconhecimento acerca das diferentes perspectivas aí existentes tem levado a erros de interpretação, a utilização imprecisa de conceitos e a pesquisas empíricas equivocadas. O presente artigo, elaborado a partir de uma ampla análise e revisão crítica da literatura, procura trazer contribuições nesta área. Apresenta, de maneira estruturada, as origens das principais perspectivas teóricas sobre aglomerações produtivas e elabora, a partir daí, uma tipologia de análises na área, destacando: a influência das proposições oriundas da economia regional, da organização industrial e das novas vertentes institucionalistas. Mostra as interações entre competitividade e as distintas abordagens sobre desenvolvimento territorial.
