dc.descriptionLas carreteras edificadas durante el régimen de gobierno del general Juan Vicente Gómez (1908-1935) vinieron a representar uno de los puntos de apoyo que contribuyó junto a la organización del Ejército Nacional, la reforma de la hacienda pública y posteriormente la explotación petrolera a cimentar una larga hegemonía política. Aprovechando el clima de consenso en torno a su figura, Gómez supo rodearse de eficientes colaboradores que le sirvieron en sus propósitos. Dos de esos personeros, fueron Román Cárdenas y Luis Vélez, quienes desempeñaron la cartera de Obras Públicas, impulsando desde allí la construcción de la obra pionera en materia de vialidad terrestre: la Carretera Central del Táchira, inaugurada en 1914, año coincidente con el vuelco político que significó la potenciación de un régimen personalista que se prolongaría hasta 1935. Pero además de servir de elemento propagandístico, la Carretera Central del Táchira vino a zanjar un largo período de aislamiento geográfico y político entre los Andes y el resto de la república.

dc.descriptionThe roads built during the regime of government of General Juan Vicente Gómez (1908-1935) came to represent one of the points of support that helped with the organization of the army, the public finance reform and the later oil exploitation to build a long political hegemony. Taking advantage of the climate of consensus around his figure, Gomez was able to surround himself with efficient staff who helped him in his purposes. Two of these personeros were Román Cárdenas and Luis Velez, who played the portfolio of Public Works, then pushing the construction of the pioneering work on earth roads: Tachira’s Central Road, opened in 1914, coinciding with the years roll meant that the political empowerment of a personality that would last until 1935. But in addition to serve as propaganda, the Tachira’s Centarl Road came to settle a long period of geographical and political isolation between the Andes and the rest of the republic.
