dc.descriptionLos objetivos de este estudio fueron evaluar el efecto de algunos factores ambientales en el peso al nacimiento (PN, n = 3169) y el peso ajustado a 205 días (P205, n = 1885), así como estimar parámetros genéticos para esas características en animales Nelore. Se utilizó la información generada de 1995 a 2000 en 34 ranchos ubicados en cinco estados de México. Los ranchos se dedican a la cría de ganado Nelore de registro y pertenecían a la Asociación Mexicana de Criadores de Cebú. Los modelos estadísticos incluyeron los efectos fijos de estado (Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Tamaulipas y Yucatán), año y época de nacimiento del animal (Seca, Lluviosa y Nortes) y sexo (Macho o Hembra) y el efecto aleatorio del residual. El modelo para estimar los parámetros genéticos incluyó el efecto fijo de grupo de contemporáneos (hato-año-épocasexo) y el efecto aleatorio aditivo directo. Los análisis se realizaron mediante los procedimientos de modelos lineales generales y máxima verosimilitud restringida libre de derivadas. Los promedios y desviaciones estándar para PN y P205 fueron 30,9 ± 3,03 y 168,8 ± 28,9 kg, respectivamente. Los machos pesaron más (P<0,05) que las hembras al nacimiento y a los 205 días. Los animales nacidos en 1999, en la época de Nortes y en los estados de Yucatán y Chiapas, tuvieron los mayores P205 (P< 0,05). La heredabilidad estimada para PN y P205 fue 0,31 ± 0,10 y 0,43 ± 0,12, respectivamente, y la correlación genética 0,29 ± 0,14. Los resultados de este estudio demuestran que los efectos ambientales son fuentes de variación relativamente importantes para PN y P205. Las altas heredabilidades estimadas para PN y P205 y la correlación genética positiva indican que es factible mejorar el crecimiento del ganado Nelore a través de la selección.

The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of several environmental factors on birth weight (BW, n = 3169) and weight adjusted to 205 days of age (W205, n = 1885), and to estimate genetic parameters for those traits. The statistical models included the fixed effects of state (Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Tamaulipas and Yucatan), year and season of birth (dry, rainy and windy and rainy) and sex of the calf (male or female). The model to estimate the genetic parameters included the fixed effect of contemporary group (herd-yearseason- sex) and the direct additive random effect. Analyses were carried out using general linear models and derivativefree restricted maximum-likelihood procedures. Means and standard deviations for BW and W205 were 30.9 ± 3.03 and 168.8 ± 28.9 kg, respectively. Males weighed more (P<0.05) than females at birth and at 205 d. Calves born in 1999, in the windy and rainy season in the states of Yucatan and Chiapas had the highest W205 (P<0.05). Heritability estimates for BW and W205 were 0.31 ± 0.10 and 0.43 ± 0.12, respectively and their genetic correlation was 0.29 ± 0.14. The results of this study show that environmental factors are important sources of variation for BW and W205. The high heritability estimates for BW and W205 and the positive genetic correlation indicates that it is possible to improve the growth of Nellore cattle by selection.
