Paralelismos y diferencias en la práctica ecuménica: Un análisis de los vínculos entre América Latina y Asia en la red de publicaciones de Mauricio López (1966-1972)

Abstract

Este artículo reconstruye la relación entre Latinoamérica y el este y el sud asiático a partir de publicaciones colectivas en las que participa un militante ecuménico latinoamericano llamado Mauricio López. El ecumenismo es un movimiento religioso que busca la unidad entre las iglesias cristianas. En las décadas de 1960 y 1970 el ecumenismo en Latinoamérica estuvo ligado fuertemente al cristianismo de izquierda y apoyó a los movimientos sociales contestatarios, en tanto que en Asia se comprometió con los procesos de descolonización. El filósofo y teólogo argentino Mauricio López, fue un líder de este movimiento. Ocupó importantes cargos en organismos ecuménicos latinoamericanos y mundiales: Dirigió el movimiento estudiantil cristiano latinoamericano (1955-1963); fue cofundador de Iglesia y Sociedad en América Latina (ISAL) en 1961 y secretario adjunto del Departamento de Iglesia y Sociedad del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (1963-1968). Entre 1973 y 1976 fue rector de la Universidad Nacional de San Luis, Argentina y en 1977 fue secuestrado-desaparecido por la última dictadura militar argentina. En un primer momento, este trabajo, indaga sobre el ecumenismo latinoamericano en las décadas de 1960 y 1970. Posteriormente, analizará los escritos de López buscando el contacto con autores asiáticos en publicaciones colectivas. Para esta instancia nos serviremos de la metodología del análisis de redes sociales, específicamente de la reconstrucción de redes de coautoría. En un tercer momento examinaremos las trayectorias biográficas de los autores asiáticos para, ya en las conclusiones, analizar los paralelismos entre sí, y las diferencias y semejanzas con la práctica ecuménica de Mauricio López.

This article describes my reconstruction of the relationship between Latin America and East and South Asia which I have carried out based upon collective publications involving a Latin American ecumenical activist named Mauricio Lopez. Ecumenism is a religious movement that seeks unity among Christian churches. In the 1960s and 1970s in Latin America, ecumenism was linked strongly to social protest movements, while in Asia it grew out of commitments to the process of decolonization. The Argentinean philosopher and theologian Mauricio Lopez was a leader of this movement. He held important positions in American and global ecumenical organizations: Leader of the Latin American Christian Student Movement (1955-1963), co-founder of Church and Society in Latin America (ISAL) in 1961, and serving as deputy secretary of the Department of Church and Society of the World Council of Churches (1963-1968). Between 1973 and 1976 he was rector of the Universidad Nacional de San Luis (Argentina), but in 1977 he disappeared as a result of being kidnapped by the Argentinean military dictatorship. This paper begins with an investigation of Latin American ecumenism in the 1960s and 1970s and then advances to analysis of the writings of Lopez as he sought contact with Asian authors. For this analysis we employ the methodology of social network analysis, specifically the reconstruction of co-authorship networks. In a third stage, we follow up with examination of the life histories of the Asian authors who corresponded with Lopez. In conclusion, we find many parallels between Lopez and the Asian authors with whom he corresponded, but there were also and the differences with Lopez’s ecumenical practice
