La Inquisición española ante el tribunal de la opinión pública: el debate liberal a propósito del Santo Oficio en Cádiz y Lima (1808-1821)

Abstract

Durante la crisis de la Monarquía hispánica los liberales desarrollaron en la emergente opinión pública un intenso debate a propósito de la Inquisición en pos de lograr su abolición. Si bien la historiografía ha abordado el problema lo ha hecho desde una perspectiva estrictamente peninsular. Nos proponemos, aquí, aproximarnos al problema desde una perspectiva comparada. Analizaremos el modo en que en Cádiz y en Lima el debate liberal opuso a la Inquisición española, representada como símbolo del despotismo y fanatismo propio del Antiguo Régimen, a la lucha por un orden basado en los derechos y libertades garantizados en una Constitución. Pero en Lima el debate tendrá una significatividad política mayor en la medida en que la Inquisición termina por identificarse ya no sólo con el Antiguo Régimen sino con la misma metrópolis.

During the crisis of the Spanish Monarchy, liberals developed, in the public opinion, a debate about the Inquisition in order to achieve the abolition of the court. Although the historiography studied the problem, it was done in a peninsular perspective. We intend, therefore, to approach the problem in a comparative perspective. We are going to analyze, then, how the liberal debate, both in Cádiz and Lima, opposed the Spanish Inquisition (represented as a symbol of the despotism and the fanaticism of the Old Regime) to an order based on the rights and liberties guaranteed in a Constitution. However, in Lima, unlike Cadiz, the debate had a greater political significance because the Inquisition ended up identified not only with the Old Regime but with the metropolis itself.
