dc.description.abstract | Numerous studies show that preschool children have difficulty producing drawings with enough information about their referents, keeping in mind their future use. The aim of the present study was to determine whether 3-and-3½-year-olds children could produce and use their own drawings in the resolution of a task when shape was the only available cue to the identity of the referents. Also, the link between representational production and the use of children’s own drawings was investigated in each age group. Children had to draw a set of simple objects of identical color and use them as a guide to fill boxes with identical objects to the previously portrayed. The results show that only 3½-year-olds successfully produced and used their drawings: at this age children were able to produce clear and informative representations of the objects and this capacity facilitated their use. In sum, preschoolers recognize drawings as means of communication to convey information not only to other people but also to themselves.
