Resumen
The logistics concept has evolved becoming more complex. In the fifties it was restricted only to physical distribution. Today, it embraces the total flow of materials, products and information between different companies. Companies in all industries have outsourced their logistics operations to specialized companies called Third Party Logistics Operators (3PL). Information technology (IT) has an important role in the development of logistics activities and in the 3PL’s performance. The purpose of this research is to investigate how the 3PLs are applying IT in their logistics processes using the case study method. Two 3PLs that operate with different industries in the Brazilian market were studied. The results indicate (1) that 3PL’s customized applications to suit their operations needs, have an important role in the creation of competitive advantages and (2) suggest that there is not a direct relationship between industry characteristics and logistics applications
