A pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar a importância do sermão como ferramenta pedagógica e de mobilização política e social e sua contribuição para a formação cultural brasileira no século XVII. A temática proposta é abordada com base na contextualização histórica e cultural da retórica cristã, como pano de fundo para compreender o sermão como instrumento cultural e sua função política no Brasil no período em questão. O percurso metodológico partiu do estudo bibliográfico apoiado em leituras, reflexões e confrontação das ideias dos autores que se dedicaram ao estudo do tema. A pesquisa está estruturada em três capítulos: o primeiro expõe o percurso histórico-cultural da retórica clássica à retórica cristã, o segundo contempla um estudo da estrutura argumentativa do sermão de Antônio Vieira e o terceiro apresenta uma reflexão sobre o sermão católico, particularmente o Sermão da Sexagésima como instrumento cultural no século XVII. Foi possível constatar a importância do Sermão da Sexagésima como ferramenta pedagógica na transmissão de valores e de um ideário de homem ajustados à formação cultural brasileira do período analisadoAbstract: This dissertation presents a study about the sermon as a cultural instrument, in the seventeenth century, an interpretation focused on the analysis of the Sixtieth Sermon, by Priest Antônio Vieira. This research aimed to analyze the importance of the sermon as a pedagogical tool, political and social mobilization and its contribution to Brazilian cultural education in the seventeenth century. The proposed theme is addressed according to the historical and cultural contextualization about the Christian rhetoric, as a background to understand the sermon as a cultural instrument and its political function in Brazil and in that period. The methodological course is based on bibliografical studies, such as readings and confrontation of ideas by authors who have dedicated to the study of this theme. The research is divided into three chapters: the first chapter presents the historical and cultural course from the classical rhetoric to Christian rhetoric, the second one includes a study of the argumentative structure of Antônio Vieira's sermon and the third chapter presents a reflection about the Catholic sermon, especially the Sixtieth Sermon as a cultural instrument in the seventeenth century. It was possible to find the importance of the Sixtieth Sermon as a pedagogical tool about the transmission of values and a set of ideas presented by a compromised man to Brazilian cultural formation in the analyzed periodMestradoFilosofia e História da EducaçãoMestra em Educação
