| dc.description | Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender o funcionamento e o sentido da dificuldade apresentada pela leitura de "Against the Day", livro do escritor americano, figura chave do pós-modernismo, Thomas Pynchon. As dimensões da obra, seus múltiplos personagens e enredos, suas incontáveis referências históricas, seu estilo saturado e sua prosa por vezes quase abstrata resultam em um livro que com frequência causa perplexidade e desorientação, ao mesmo tempo em que, por conta de seu humor, de seu colorido e de uma aparente estrutura de narrativa de busca, instiga a leitura e a tentativa de decifração. Esse enciclopedismo singular, centrado em "mistérios" que no mais das vezes ficam por resolver, provoca uma diversidade de respostas nos leitores casuais, que no caso de Pynchon são especialmente obcecados em decifrar suas obras, e em seus críticos, que apresentam, em geral, obsessão de ordem semelhante. Após a investigação dos pressupostos, métodos e resultados de leituras críticas e casuais, chegou-se a um panorama dos sucessos e limitações desses trabalhos, e à necessidade de elaborar uma análise formal mais cuidadosa de "Against the Day", a fim de constituir sua especificidade discursiva. A partir, portanto, de uma aproximação com a construção formal, estruturação e funcionamento do texto, foi possível explorar um elemento central de "Against the Day" e de uma certa vertente do pós-modernismo: o enciclopedismo. A narrativa enciclopédica, que tem uma tradição milenar já abordada por Northrop Frye e Edward Mendelson, adquiriu no período moderno uma feição particular, descrita por Franco Moretti. No entanto, a "pós-modernidade" parece ter introduzido ainda outras transformações formais no gênero, cujas implicações precisam ser analisadas, a fim de contrapôr o livro de Pynchon a esse pano de fundo, uma das possibilidades de investigações que a construção formal da obra permite | |
| dc.description | Abstract: The purpose of this work is to understand the operation and the meaning of the difficulty presented by the reading of "Against the Day", book of the American writer, key figure of postmodernism, Thomas Pynchon. The dimensions of the work, its multiple characters and entanglements, its countless historical references, its saturated style and its sometimes almost abstract prose result in a book that often causes perplexity and disorientation, at the same time that, due to its humor, its color and an apparent structure of search narrative, instigates the reading and the attempt of decipherment. This singular encyclopedism, centered on "mysteries" that more often than not remain to be solved, provokes a diversity of responses in the casual readers, who in the case of Pynchon are especially obsessed in deciphering their works, and in their critics, who present, in general, obsession of a similar order. After an investigation of the assumptions, methods and results of critical and casual readings, an overview of the successes and limitations of these works was achieved, and the need for a more thorough formal analysis of "Against the Day", established, in order to constitute its discursive specificity. Starting from an approximation with the formal construction, structuring and functioning of the text, it was possible to explore a central element of "Against the Day" and of a certain slope of postmodernism: encyclopedism. The encyclopedic narrative, which has a millenary tradition already addressed by Northrop Frye and Edward Mendelson, acquired in the modern period a particular feature, described by Franco Moretti. However, "postmodernity" seems to have introduced yet other formal transformations in the genre, whose implications need to be analyzed in order to counteract Pynchon's book against is background, one of the possibilities of investigations that the formal construction of the work allows | |
