Commelina benghalensis L. is a weed of field crops, which produces aerial and underground flowers. We investigated de effects of light and different temperature regimes on germination of seeds of these two kinds of flowers. The seeds germinated at 25 degrees C and 30 degrees C, but there was no germination at 10 degrees C. The light has no effect on germination, independent of the temperature at which the seeds were submitted,. Plants grown from aerial and underground seeds were indifferent to photoperiod for flowering. The aerial and underground flowering ocurred under 8 and 18 h of light. The ability of C. benghalensis for germination in light and dark, at different temperatures and its capacity for flowering in different photoperiods are discussed with respect to the adaptability of this plant to new environments.
