The large species of Leporinus Spix from Rio Meta in Colombia can be diagnosed on the basis of shape and color of blotches, although they overlap greatly in size. Multivariate statistical procedures were employed to determine whether the three large, blotched species of Leporinus from Rio Meta can be discriminated on the basis of quantitative metric characters. Principal components analysis showed that L. boehlkei and L. friderici, which are similar in size, differ in body shape, whereas L. muyscorum and L. boehlkei, which differ greatly in size, have allometrically comparable shapes. Size-independent canonical variates analysis further demonstrates that the three species of Leporinus can be discriminated on the basis of quantitative morphometric characters.
