The purpose of this paper is to analyze the life history of the 14th century English poet, Geoffrey Chaucer. Coming from the London high bourgeoisie, Chaucer becomes a model of social ascension and nobility - aspects so esteemed by members of the bourgeois group in the late Middle Ages. He achieves the status of nobility by dedicating his life of work at the English royal court and by receiving protection and patronage to his literary works from an important noble of the period. His original style of writing, the choice of English as the language for his literary works (something unusual in the 14th century) and his successful career at the English court are the main elements that make Chaucer a model of social ascension through literature to be followed by 15th century English poets and raise him to the position of "Father of English literature".
