In recent years, considerable work has gone into deriving weights for pre-stack Kirchhoff depth migration, so that the migration results adequately provide reliable amplitudes, as required for later attribute analysis and inversion. This is the case of true-amplitude migration, in which the migration outputs at each reflector image represents the primary-reflection amplitude after elimination of the geometrical-spreading effects. Migration with proper true-amplitude weights usually involves a large increase in computer time and storage. Two approximate methods for implementing true-amplitude depth migration, which do not require a large increase in computer resources, are presented. The first method is based on a straight-ray approximation and circumvents the need to trace rays, or to calculate tables in addition to the travel time tables which are normally used in Kirchhoff migration. The second procedure includes an amplitude correction of the migrated gathers after migration, and is based on a standard dynamic ray approximation. Tests on synthetic data as well as on field data show that both procedures give accurate results for moderate to complex structures.
