dc.description | We study the interaction between a very long solenoid and a polarizable particle with emphasis on the role of the electromagnetic fluctuactions. The solenoid belongs to an RLC circuit and the zero point and thermal fluctuations of the current (Nyquist noise) are taken into account. The polarizable particle, which is placed in the exterior region of the long solenoid, is modeled by a charge bounded by a harmonic force. Using the approach based on Liouville's equation, a stochastic Schrodinger like equation for the bounded charge is derived and exact solutions ape constructed. These solutions appears in the form of coherent states of the harmonic oscillator Dissipative effects are naturally taken into account by considering the radiation reaction force. The effects of the Nyquist noise on the ground state and on the excited states of the oscillator are identified. We show that the solenoid vector potential (A) over right arrow(sol) is time varying and always has fluctuations. Its effects on the charged particle, in the exterior region of the solenoid, is manifested by the electric (c (E) over right arrow(sol) = -partial derivative (A) over right arrow(sol)/partial derivative t) and magnetic ((B) over right arrow(sol) = <(del)over right arrow> x (A) over right arrow(sol)) fields generated by the time-dependent microscopic current within the solenoid coils. Therefore, the polarizable particle can be considered as a detector of the fields generated by the solenoid. We shall show that it is possible to detect these fields in the exterior region of the solenoid even when the macroscopic current is off. | |
