Conventional common-reflection-surface (CRS) parameter estimation is based on coherence analysis using the second-order semblance function. Extensions of the usual semblance can be defined by replacing second-order by higher-order quantities. Here we tested such extensions in an application to CRS parameter estimation. We found encouraging results by a natural extension of semblance to the fourth order. Numerical examples show that for low noise levels, results for all tested orders of the semblance were equivalent, whereas for high noise levels, the new fourth-order semblance function worked better in the linear search. This measure is less dependent on the aperture and noise level, thus resulting in reliable estimates of the local slope more often than when using conventional semblance.
