The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the applicability of the Spectral/hp Finite Element Method, originally developed to CFD problems [17], for the solution of linear and non-linear structural elastic problems using 3D non-structured meshes. Before achieving this goad, we present a previous study considering the selection of a set of hierarchical basis functions suitable to elliptic problems. This study compares some triangular hierarchical basis available in the literature in terms of the numerical conditioning resulting from the solution of the Poisson's problem with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Based on these prior results and on the computational benefits of a tensor formulation when dealing with high-order numerical integration and differentiation, the Spectral/hp framework due to [17] was adopted to solve linear and non-linear structural elastic problems. Numerical examples are used to validate the application of the Spectral/hp FEM in the context of the structural mechanics.
