Resumen
Objective: To evaluate the retention and caries preventive effect of two glass ionomers used as fissure sealants: one resin modified glass ionomer (A) and one conventional glass-ionomer cement (B). Samples and methods: The permanent first molars of 100 children, 6-8 years of age at the start of the study, were sealed. Material A was applied on one side (right side, upper, and lower) and material B was applied on the contralateral side (left side, upper, and lower) of the mouth. The control group was composed of 108 children who did not receive fissure sealant but received oral health education. After 5 years, 64.0% of the children of the experimental group and 73.0% of the children of the control group were available for reexamination. Results: Material A was completely lost in 74.2% and material B in 89.0% (Wilcoxon matched pairs test, P < 0.05). Total retention rate was 1.6% for materials A and B. After 5 years, caries increment was 21.5% for the experimental group and 34.2% for the control group (x2-test, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Sealing pits and fissures with glass-ionomer cements was effective in preventing caries. 31 5 386 391 Vrbic, V., Reasons for the caries decline in Slovenia (2000) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 28, pp. 126-132 Truin, G.J., Konig, K.G., Bronkhorst, E.M., Frankenmolen, F., Mulder, J., Van't Hof, M.A., Time trends in caries experience of 6- and 12-year-old children of different socioeconomic status in The Hague (1998) Caries Res, 32, pp. 1-4 In Brazil, DMFT at 12 years of age has decreased by 55.22% (1996) J Abo Nac, pp. 8BC1-6. , Portuguese Ripa, L.W., Sealants revised: An update of the effectiveness of pit and fissure sealants (1993) Caries Res, 27, pp. 77-82 Simonsen, R.J., Glass ionomer as fissure sealant - A critical review (1996) J Public Health Dent, 56, pp. 146-149 Forss, H., Halme, E., Retention of a glass ionomer cement and a resin-based fissure sealant and effect on carious outcome after 7 years (1998) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 26, pp. 21-25 Williams, B., Winter, G.B., Fissure sealants: Further results at 4 years (1981) Br Dent J, 150, pp. 183-187 Skartveit, L., Tveit, A.B., Tötdal, B., Övrebo, R.C., Raadal, M., In vivo fluoride uptake in enamel and dentin from fluoride containing materials (1990) ASDC J Dent Child, 57, pp. 97-100 Seppä, L., Forss, H., Resistance of occlusal fissures to demineralization after loss of glass ionomer sealants in vitro (1991) Pediatr Dent, 13, pp. 39-42 Mejäre, I., Mjör, I.A., Glass ionomer and resin-based fissure sealants: A clinical study (1990) Scand J Dent Res, 98, pp. 345-350 Forss, H., Saarni, U.M., Seppa, L., Comparison of glass ionomer and resin-based fissure sealants: A 2-year clinical trial (1994) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 22, pp. 21-24 Karlzén-Reurving, G., Van Dijken, J.W., A 3-year follow-up of glass ionomer cement and resin fissure sealant (1995) ASDC J Dent Child, 62, pp. 108-110 Poulsen, S., Beiruti, N., Sadat, N., A comparison of retention and the effect on caries of fissure sealing with a glass ionomer and a resin-based sealant (2001) Community Dent Oral Epidemiol, 29, pp. 298-301 Aranda, M., Garcia-Godoy, F., Clinical evaluation of the retention and wear of a light-cured pit and fissure glass ionomer sealant (1995) J Clin Pediatr Dent, 19, pp. 273-277 Winkler, M.M., Deschepper, E.J., Dean, J.A., Moore, B.K., Cochran, M.A., Using a resin -modified glass ionomer as an occlusal sealant: A 1-year clinical study (1996) J Am Dent Assoc, 127, pp. 1508-1514 Smales, R.J., Wong, K.C., 2-Year clinical performance of a resin-modified glass ionomer sealant (1999) Am J Dent, 12, pp. 59-61 Pereira, A.C., Pardi, V., Mialhe, F.L., Basting, R.T., Meneghim, M.C., Werner, C., Clinical evaluation of a polyacid-modified resin used as fissure sealant: A 48-month follow up (2000) Am J Dent, 13, pp. 294-296 Pereira, A.C., Pardi, V., Basting, R.T., Clinical evaluation of glass ionomers used as fissure sealants: 24 Months results (2001) ASDC J Dent Child, 58, pp. 168-174 De Luca-Fraga, L.R., Freire Pimenta, L.A., Clinical evaluation of glass ionomer/resin-based hybrid materials used as pit and fissure sealants (2001) Quintessence Int, 32, pp. 463-468 Pereira, A.C., Basting, R.T., Pinelli, C., De Castro Meneghim, M., Werner, C.W., Retention and caries prevention of Vitremer and Ketac-Bond used as occlusal sealants after 6 and 12 months (1999) Am J Dent, 12, pp. 62-64 Ketley, C.E., Holt, R.D., Visual and radiographic diagnosis of occlusal caries in first permanent molars and in second primary molars (1993) Br Dent J, 174, pp. 364-370 Brown, L.J., Wall, T.P., Lazar, V., Trends in untreated caries in permanent teeth of children 6-18 years old (1999) J Am Dent Assoc, 130, pp. 1637-1644 Kaste, L.M., Selwitz, R.H., Oldakowski, R.J., Brunelle, J.A., Winn, D.M., Brown, L.J., Coronal caries in primary and permanent dentition of children and adolescents 1-17 years of age: United States, 1988-1991 (1996) J Dent Res, 75 (SPEC NO), pp. 631-641 Meneghim, M.C., Saliba, N.A., Pereira, A.C., Importance of the first permanent molars in the determination of DMFT Index (1999) J Bras Odontopediatr Odontol Bebê, 2, pp. 37-41. , Portuguese Wilson, I.P., Preventive Dentistry (1895) Dent.
