Resumen
The incorporation of chemical substances in environmental matrices, notably medicines and some endocrine disruptors, has been a factor of increasing concern by scientific community. These compounds, that have been called "emerging contaminants", are widely used by the modern society, and are characterized by their environmental impacts, even in low concentrations, since they interfere with the metabolism of various organisms, and result in disturbs of its population equilibrium. In this context, the medication discharge in its different forms, and the demand for strategies of management of these wastes, takes an important role. These strategies, to be worth need to consider the participation of professionals evolved at all the phases of the life cycle of medicines. This work presents a critical overview, based on a technical literature review and regulations analysis, about the effects of waste medicines on environment, especially on water bodies. ©Sociedade Brasileira de Toxicologia. 22 1-2 1 8 McClellan, K., Halden, R.U., Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in archived U.S. Biosolids from the 2001 EPA national sewage sludge survey (2010) Water Res, 44, pp. 658-668 Fent, K., Weston, A.A., Caminada, D., Ecotoxicology of human pharmaceuticals (2006) Aquatic Toxicology, 76 (2), pp. 122-159. , DOI 10.1016/j.aquatox.2005.09.009, PII S0166445X05003267 Länge, R., Hutchinson, T.H., Croudace, C.P., Siegmund, F., Effects of the synthectic strogen 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol on the life cycle of the fathead minnow (2001) Environ Toxicol Chem, 20, pp. 1216-1224 Schwartz, T., Kohnen, W., Jansen, B., Detection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their resistence genes in wastewater, surface water and drinking water biofilms (2002) Micro Ecol, 1470, pp. 1-11 Petersen, A., Andersen, J.S., Kaewmak, T., Somsiri, T., Dalsgaard, A., Impact of integrated fish farming on antimicrobial resistance in a pond environment (2002) Applied and Environmental Microbiology, 68 (12), pp. 6036-6042. , DOI 10.1128/AEM.68.12.6036-6042.2002 Jones, O.A.H., Voulvoulis, N., Lester, J.N., Potential ecological and human health risks associated with the presence of pharmaceutically active compounds in the aquatic environment (2004) Critical Reviews in Toxicology, 34 (4), pp. 335-350. , DOI 10.1080/10408440490464697 Morley, N.J., Environmental risk and toxicology of human and veterinary waste: Pharmaceutical exposure to aquatic host-parasite relationships (2009) Environ Toxicol Pharmacol, 27, pp. 161-175 Ruhoy, I.S., Daughton, C.G., Beyond the medicine cabinet: An analysis of where and why medications accumulate (2008) Environ Internat, 34, pp. 1157-1169 Ruhoy, I.S., Daughton, C.G., Types and quantities of leftover drugs entering the environment via disposal to sewage - Revealed by coroner records (2007) Sci Total Environ, 388, pp. 137-148 Glassmmeyer, S.T., Hinchey, E.K., Boehme, S.E., Disposal practices for unwanted residential medications in the United States (2009) Environ Internat, 35 (3), pp. 566-572 Ternes, T.A., Occurrence of drugs in Germany sewage treatment plants and rivers (1998) Water Res, 32, pp. 3245-3257 Daugton, C.G., Cradle-to-cradle stewardship of drugs for minimizing their environmental disposition while promoting human health.
