dc.descriptionThe objective of the present research is identify verbal and non-verbal memory deficits in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and to correlate with lateralization of the epileptogenic zone. Previous studies indicates that the verbal memory deficits are associated with temporal lobe dysfunction of the dominant hemisphere for language or, in the most persons, of the left temporal lobe (LTL), whereas non-verbal or visual memory disturbances are related with right temporal lobe (RTL) dysfunction. Twelve patients, with age between 16 and 50 years, were evaluated with Wechsler Memory Scale - Revised (WMS-R), serial Eletrencephalograms, Video-EEG, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The WMS-R results were normal in four patients with right hippocampal atrophy. Six patients exhibited deficit in only one of the memory modalities: (a) non-verbal in one patient with right hippocampal atrophy and (b) verbal in five patients - four with left hippocampal atrophy and one with bilateral atrophy with left sided predominance. Two patients with left TLE presented verbal and non-verbal memory deficits without lateralization. The results analysis in the groups of patients, according to lateralization of the epileptogenic zone (left versus right), revealed that the non-verbal memory index was not statistically different between patients with left and right focus (p = 0.09), whereas the verbal memory index was statistically lower in patients with left TLE (p=0.006).
