Resumen
In this study, we used data from both experiments and mathematical simulations to analyze the consequences of the interacting effects of intraguild predation (IGP), cannibalism and parasitism occurring in isolation and simultaneously in trophic interactions involving two blowfly species under shared parasitism. We conducted experiments to determine the short-term response of two blowfly species to these interactions with respect to their persistence. A mathematical model was employed to extend the results obtained from these experiments to the long-term consequences of these interactions for the persistence of the blowfly species. Our experimental results revealed that IGP attenuated the strength of the effects of cannibalism and parasitism between blowfly host species, increasing the probability of persistence of both populations. The simulations obtained from the mathematical model indicated that IGP is a key interaction for the long-term dynamics of this system. The presence of different species interacting in a tri-trophic system relaxed the severity of the effects of a particular interaction between two species, changing species abundances and promoting persistence through time. This pattern was related to indirect interactions with a third species, the parasitoid species included in this study. © 2012 The Society of Population Ecology and Springer Japan. 55 1 11 26 Abrams, P.A., Chen, X., The effect of competition between prey species on the evolution of their vulnerabilities to a shared predator (2002) Evol Ecol Res, 4, pp. 897-909 Carvalho, L.M.L., Thyssen, P.J., Goof, M.L., Linhares, A.X., Observations on the succession patterns of necrophagous insects on a pig carcass in an urban area of southeastern Brazil (2004) Anil Aggrawal's Internet J Forensic Med Toxicol, 5, pp. 33-39 Chaneton, E.J., Bonsall, M.B., Enemy-mediated apparent competition: empirical patterns and the evidence (2000) Oikos, 88, pp. 380-394 Faraway, J.J., (2006) Extending the Linear Model with R: Generalized Linear Mixed Effects and Nonparametric Regression Models, , Broken Sound Parkway NW: Chapman and Hall/CRC Faria, L.D.B., Orsi, L., Trinca, L.A., Godoy, W.A.C., Larval predation by Chrysomya albiceps on Cochliomyia macellaria, Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya putoria (1999) Entomol Exp Appl, 90, pp. 149-155 Faria, L.D.B., Godoy, W.A.C., Reis, S.F., Larval predation on different instars in blowfly populations (2004) Braz Arch Biol Techn, 47, pp. 887-894 Faria, L.D.B., Reigada, C., Trinca, L.A., Godoy, W.A.C., Foraging behavior by an intraguild IG-predator blowfly, Chrysomya albiceps (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (2007) J Ethol, 25, pp. 287-294 Godfray, H.C.J., (1994) Parasitoids: Behavioral and Evolutionary Ecology, , New Jersey: Princeton University Press Godoy, W.A.C., Zuben, C.J.V., Reis, S.F., Theoretical estimates of consumable food and probability of acquiring food in larvae of Chrysomya putoria (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (1996) Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz, 91, pp. 257-264 Godoy, W.A.C., von Zuben, F.J., von Zuben, C.J., Reis, S.F., Spatial-temporal dynamics and transition from asymptotic to bounded oscillations in Chrysomya albiceps (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (2001) Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz, 96, pp. 627-634 Goodbrod, J.R., Goff, M.L., Effects of larval population density on rates of development and interactions between two species of Chrysomya (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in laboratory culture (1990) J Med Entomol, 27, pp. 338-343 Grassberger, M., Frank, C., Initial study of arthropod succession on pig carrion in a central European urban habitat (2004) J Med Entomol, 41, pp. 511-523 Grillenberger, B.K., Zande, L.V.Z., Bijlsma, R., Gadau, J., Beukeboom, L.W., Reproductive strategies under multiparasitism in natural populations of the parasitoid wasp Nasonia (Hymenoptera) (2009) J Evol Biol, 22, pp. 460-470 Gurney, W., Blythe, S., Nisbet, R.M., Nicholson's blowflies revisited (1980) Nature, 287, pp. 17-21 Holt, R.D., Predation, apparent competition and the structure of IG-prey communities (1977) Theor Popul Biol, 12, pp. 197-229 Holyoak, M., Sachdev, S., Omnivory and the stability of simple food webs (1998) Oecologia, 117, pp. 413-419 Kondoh, M., Building trophic modules into a persistent food web (2008) Pnas, 105, pp. 166631-166635 McCann, S.K., Hastings, A., Huxel, G.R., Weak trophic interactions and the balance of nature (1998) Nature, 395, pp. 794-798 Morin, P.J., Functional redundancy, non-additive interactions, and supply-side dynamics in experimental pond communities (1995) Ecology, 76, pp. 133-149 Nagel, W.P., Pimentel, D., The intrinsic rate of natural increase of the Pteromalid Parasite N. vitripennis (Walk.) on its Muscoid host Musca domestica L (1964) Ecology, 45, pp. 658-660 Ostrom, P.H., Colunga Garcia, M., Gage, S.H., Establishing pathways of energy flow for insect IG-predators using stable isotope ratios: field and laboratory evidence (1997) Oecologia, 109, pp. 108-113 Otto, S.B., Berlow, E.L., Rank, N.E., Smiley, J., Brose, U., Predator diversity and identity drive interaction strength and trophic cascades in a food web (2008) Ecology, 89, pp. 134-144 Polis, G.A., The evolution and dynamics of intraspecific predation (1981) Annu Rev Ecol Syst, 12, pp. 225-251 Polis, G.A., Holt, R.D., Intraguild predation: the dynamics of complex trophic interactions (1992) Tree, 7, pp. 151-155 Polis, G.A., Myers, C.A., Holt, R.D., The ecology and evolution of intraguild predation: potential competitors that eat each other (1989) Annu Rev Ecol Syst, 20, pp. 297-330 Reigada, C., Godoy, W.A.C., Seasonal fecundity and body size in Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (2005) Neotr Entomol, 34, pp. 163-168 Reigada, C., Godoy, W.A.C., Direct and indirect top-down effects of previous contact with an enemy on the feeding behavior of blowfly larvae (2012) Entomol Exp Appl, 142, pp. 71-77 Riback, T.I.S., Godoy, W.A.C., Fecundity, body size and population dynamics of Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (2008) Braz J Biol, 68, pp. 131-136 Rosa, G.S., de Carvalho, L.R., Reis, S.F., The dynamics of intraguild predation in Chrysomya albiceps Wied.
