Resumen
This clinical study investigated if daily immersion in denture cleansers reduces microbial counts on removable partial denture's (RPD) biofilm. Twenty-five RPD wearer volunteers were selected and instructed to complement the hygiene of their dentures by immersing them in an enzymatic peroxide-based denture cleanser (Polident® 3 minute) once a day for 3 min for a period of 15 days. The biofilm was collected from RPD surfaces with a swab immediately before (baseline) and after the experimental period. The samples were placed in sterile saline solution, sonicated at 7 W and then plated on specific culture media to quantify total microorganisms, total streptococci and Candida spp. counts. Data from both collections were compared by paired t-test (α=0.05). It was observed a significant reduction on total microorganisms' counts in RPD biofilm after denture cleanser use (p=0.007). This reduction was also observed for total streptococci (p=0.0428), but no difference was observed on Candida spp. counts. It was concluded that daily use of denture cleanser improved denture hygiene by reducing total microorganisms and total streptococci from RPD surface but had no effect on Candida spp. population. 24 4 353 356 Preshaw, P.M., Walls, A.W.G., Jakubovics, N.S., Moynihan, P.J., Jepson, N.J.A., Loewy, Z., Association of removable partial denture use with oral and systemic health (2011) J Dent, 39, pp. 711-719 Glass, R.T., Conrad, R.S., Bullard, J.W., Goodson, L.B., Mehta, N., Lech, S.J., Evaluation of microbial flora found in previously worn prostheses from the Northeast and Southwest regions of the United States (2010) J Prosthet Dent, 103, pp. 384-389 Dikbas, I., Koksal, T., Calikkocaoglu, S., Investigation of the cleanliness of dentures in a university hospital (2006) Int J Prosthodont, 19, pp. 294-298 Peracini, A., Andrade, I.M., de Paranhos, H.F., Silva, C.H., de Souza, R.F., Behaviors and hygiene habits of complete denture wearers (2010) Braz Dent J, 21, pp. 247-252 Padilha, D.M., Hugo, F.N., Hilgert, J.B., Dal Moro, R.G., Hand function and oral hygiene in older institutionalized Brazilians (2007) J Am Geriatr Soc, 55, pp. 1333-1338 Nishi, Y., Seto, K., Kamashita, Y., Take, C., Kurono, A., Nagaoka, E., Examination of denture-cleaning methods based on the quantity of microorganisms adhering to a denture (2012) Gerodontology, 29, pp. 259-566 de Freitas Fernandes, F.S., Pereira-Cenci, T., da Silva, W.J., Filho, A.P., Straioto, F.G., Del Bel Cury, A.A., Efficacy of denture cleansers on Candida spp. biofilm formed on polyamide and polymethyl methacrylate resins (2011) J Prosthet Dent, 105, pp. 51-58 Pellizzaro, D., Polyzois, G., Machado, A.L., Giampaolo, E.T., Sanitá, P.V., Vergani, C.E., Effectiveness of mechanical brushing with different denture cleansing agents in reducing in vitro Candida albicans biofilm viability (2012) Braz Dent J, 23, pp. 547-554 Paranhos, H.F., Silva-Lovato, C.H., Souza, R.F., Cruz, P.C., Freitas, K.M., Peracini, A., Effects of mechanical and chemical methods on denture biofilm accumulation (2007) J Oral Rehabil, 34, pp. 606-612 Cruz, P.C., Andrade, I.M., Peracini, A., Souza-Gugelmin, M.C., Silva-Lovato, C.H., de Souza, R.F., The effectiveness of chemical denture cleansers and ultrasonic device in biofilm removal from complete dentures (2011) J Appl Oral Sci, 19, pp. 668-673 Felipucci, D.N., Davi, L.R., Paranhos, H.F., Bezzon, O.L., Silva, R.F., Barbosa Jr., F., Effect of different cleansers on the weight and ion release of removable partial denture: An in vitro study (2011) J Appl Oral Sci, 19, pp. 483-487 Felipucci, D.N., Davi, L.R., Paranhos, H.F., Bezzon, O.L., Silva, R.F., Pagnano, V.O., Effect of different cleansers on the surface of removable partial denture (2011) Braz Dent J, 22, pp. 392-397 Davi, L.R., Felipucci, D.N., de Souza, R.F., Bezzon, O.L., Lovato-Silva, C.H., Pagnano, V.O., Effect of denture cleansers on metal ion release and surface roughness of denture base materials (2012) Braz Dent J, 23, pp. 387-393 Dills, S.S., Olshan, A.M., Goldner, S., Brogdon, C., Comparison of the antimicrobial capability of an abrasive paste and chemical-soak denture cleaners (1988) J Prosthet Dent, 60, pp. 467-470 de Andrade, I.M., Cruz, P.C., da Silva, C.H.L., de Souza, R.F., Paranhos, H.F.O., Candido, R.C., Effervescent tablets and ultrasonic devices against Candida and mutans streptococci in denture biofilm (2011) Gerodontology, 28, pp. 264-270 Budtz-Jorgensen, E., Materials and methods for cleaning dentures (1979) J Prosthet Dent, 42, pp. 619-623 de Oliveira, V.M., de Lucena, S.C., Garcia, R.C., Del Bel Cury, A.A., Effect of a denture cleanser on the concentration of volatile sulphur compounds and denture biofilm in institutionalised elderly (2011) Gerodontology, 28, pp. 134-139 Kulak, Y., Arikan, A., Kazazoglu, E., Existence of Candida albicans and microorganisms in denture stomatitis patients (1997) J Oral Rehabil, 24, pp. 788-790 Figueiral, M.H., Azul, A., Pinto, E., Fonseca, P.A., Branco, F.M., Scully, C., Denturerelated stomatitis: Identification of aetiological and predisposing factors-a large cohort (2007) J Oral Rehabil, 34, pp. 448-455 Nikawa, H., Yamamoto, T., Hamada, T., Sadamori, S., Agrawal, S., Cleansing efficacy of commercial denture cleansers: Ability to reduce Candida albicans biofilm activity (1995) Int J Prosthodont, 8, pp. 527-534 Jose, A., Coco, B.J., Milligan, S., Young, B., Lappin, D.F., Bagg, J., Murray, C., Ramage, G., Reducing the incidence of denture stomatitis: Are denture cleansers sufficient?
