Resumen
This study compared reactive dyestuffs and vat dyestuffs in the dyeing of cotton. We investigated the possibility of reuse of the effluent generated, the ecological costs, and the colorfastness to water, rubbing, daylight, and perspiration. The experiments with vat dyestuffs showed slight advantage in terms of ecological costs, generating less molecules of carbon dioxide than the experiments conducted with reactive dyestuffs, lower consumption of energy, and greater possibility for reuse of treated effluent. In addition, vat dyestuffs exhibited decolorization efficiency above 99% and rates of total organic carbon removal over 90% in all cases, in addition to higher values in colorfastness properties. © The Author(s) 2014 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav. 84 10 1009 1017 Prado, M.V., (2011) Sectoral report of the Brazilian textile industry, , ABIT/IEMI (in Portuguese) Ignachewski, F., Fujiwara, S.T., Cótica, L.F., Degradation of reactive dyes by photo-fenton process involving the use of molecular sieve 4A modified with Fe3+ (2010) Quim Nova, 338, pp. 1640-1645 Ruschioni, R., Finishing processes in wet opened knitted under ecological considerations and aspects of quality (2007) Rev Quim Text, 86, pp. 54-65 Riera-Torres, M., Gutierrez-Bouzan, M.C., Morell, J.V., Influence of electrochemical pre-treatment in dyeing wastewater reuse for five reactive dyes (2011) Text Res J, 81, pp. 1926-1939 Salem, V., (2010) Textile Dyeing: Fibers, Concepts and Technologies, pp. 151-174. , Sao Paulo, Brazil: Ed.
