Resumen
Faced by a growing need of identification and delimitation of new and established cryptic species that are being lost at an increasing rate, taxonomists can now more than ever take advantage of an enormous variety of new molecular and computational tools. At this moment they should be open to all new available technologies in the so called "technology-driven revolution" in systematics. The use of the "DNAbarcode" has been discussed by those applying successfully this approach to identify and diagnose species and by those who believe that the flaws in the use of this molecular marker are as many as to negate the worth of its employment. For insects of the order Lepidoptera neither side seems totally correct or wrong, and although many groups of lepidopterans have been taxonomically resolved by using exclusively or additionally this marker for diagnoses, for others the "barcode" helped little to resolve taxonomic issues. Here we briefly present some pros and cons of using DNA barcode as a tool in taxonomic studies, with special attention to studies with groups of Lepidoptera developed in the last few years. 38 4 441 451 Abdo, Z., Golding, G.B., Astep toward barcoding life: A model- based, decision theoretic method to assign genes to preexisting species groups (2007) Syst Biol, 56, pp. 44-56 Agapow, P.M., Bininda-Emonds, O.R.P., Crandall, K.A., Gittleman, J.L., Mace, G.M., Marshall, J.C., Purvis, A., The impact of species concept on biodiversity studies (2004) Q Rev Biol, 79, pp. 161-179 Aguiar, A.P., Santos, B.F., Couri, M.S., Rafael, J.A., Costa, C., Ide, S., Duarte, M., Azevedo, C.O., Entomologia Zoologia: estado da arte e perspectivas para os próximos 10 anos, , in press, In Rocha R M, Boeger W A P, Curitiba, Editora da Universidade Federal do Paraná Ahrens, D., Monaghan, M.T., Vogler, A.P., DNA-basedtaxonomy for associating adults and larvae in multi-species assemblages of chafers (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) (2007) Mol Phylogenet Evol, 44, pp. 436-449 Amaral, A.R., Sequeira, M., Coelho, M.M., A first approach to the usefulness of cytochrome c oxidase I barcodes in the identification of closely related delphinid cetacean species (2007) Mar Freshwater Res, 58, pp. 505-510 Armstrong, K.F., Ball, S.L., DNA barcodes for biosecurity: Invasive species identification (2005) Philos Trans R Soc Lond B Biol Sci, 360, pp. 1813-1823 Baker, C.S., Palumbi, S.R., Which whales are hunted?
