Resumen
The maintenance of a given body orientation is obtained by the complex relation between sensory information and muscle activity. Therefore, this study purpose was to review the role of visual, somatosensory, vestibular and auditory information in the maintenance and control of the posture. Method. a search by papers for the last 24 years was done in the PubMed and CAPES databases. The following keywords were used: postural control, sensory information, vestibular system, visual system, somatosensory system, auditory system and haptic system. Results. the influence of each sensory system and its integration were analyzed for the maintenance and control of the posture. Conclusion. the literature showed that there is information redundancy provided by sensory channels. Thus, the central nervous system chooses the main source for the posture control. 19 2 349 357 Cupps, B., Postural control: A current review (1997) Neuro Developmental Treatment, 1, pp. 3-8 Horak, F.B., McPherson, J.M., Postural orientation and equilibrium (1996) Handbook of physiology, pp. 255-292. , In: Rowell L, Shepard J (eds), New York: Oxford Latash, M.L., (1998) Neurophysiological basis of movement, pp. 163-178. , Champaign: Human Kinetics Cordo, P.J., Nashner, L.M., Properties of postural adjustments associated with rapid arm movements (1982) J Neurophysiol, 47, pp. 287-308 Winter, D.A., (1990) Kinetics: Forces and moments of force, biomechanics and motor control of human movement, pp. 74-102. , Waterloo: Wiley, Interscience Nashner, L.M., Analysis of stance posture in humans (1981) Handbook of behavior neurology, 5, pp. 527-565. , In: Towe AL, Lusche ES, New York: Plenum Press Ghez, C., Posture (1991) Principles of neuroscience, pp. 596-607. , In: Kandel ER, Schwortz JH, Jessell A, 3rd ed, New York: Elsevier McCollum, G., Shupert, C.L., Nashner, L.M., Organizing sensory information for postural control in altered sensory environments (1996) J Theorical Biol, 180, pp. 257-270. , http://dx.doi.org/10.1006/jtbi.1996.0101 Manson, C., Kandel, E.R., Central Visual Pathways (1991) Principles of neuroscience, pp. 420-439. , In: Kandel ER, Schwortz JH, Jessell A, 3rd ed.
