Resumen
Objective The aim of this study was to use mechanical and photoelastic tests to compare the performance of cannulated screws with other fixation methods in mandibular symphysis fractures. Study Design Ten polyurethane mandibles were allocated to each group and fixed as follows: group PRP, 2 perpendicular miniplates; group PLL, 1 miniplate and 1 plate, parallel; and group CS, 2 cannulated screws. Vertical linear loading tests were performed. The differences between mean values were analyzed with the Tukey test. The photoelastic test was carried out using a polariscope. Results The results revealed differences between the CS and PRP groups at 1, 3, 5, and 10 millimeters of displacement. The photoelastic test confirmed higher stress concentration in all groups close to the mandibular base, whereas the CS group showed it throughout the region assessed. Conclusions Conical cannulated screws performed well in mechanical and photoelastic tests. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. 118 2 174 180 Batista, A.M., Marques, L.S., Batista, A.E., Falci, S.G., Ramos-Jorge, M.L., Urban-rural differences in oral and maxillofacial trauma (2010) Braz Oral Res, 26, pp. 132-138 Chrcanovic, B.R., Abreu, M.H., Freire-Maia, B., Souza, L.N., Facial fractures in children and adolescents: A retrospective study of 3 years in hospital in Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2010) Dent Traumatol, 26, pp. 262-270 Chrcanovic, B.R., Freire-Maia, B., Souza, L.N., Araújo, V.O., Abreu, M.H., Facial fractures: A 1 year retrospective study in a hospital in Belo Horizonte (2004) Braz Oral Res, 18, pp. 322-328 Gandhi, S., Ranganathan, L.K., Solanki, M., Mathew, G.C., Singh, I., Bither, S., Pattern of maxillofacial fractures at a tertiary hospital in northern India: A 4-year retrospective study of 718 patients (2011) Dent Traumatol, 27, pp. 257-262 Erol, B., Tanrikulu, R., Görgun, B., Maxillofacial fractures: Analysis of demographic distribution and treatment in 2901 patients (25-year experience) (2004) J Craniomaxillofac Surg, 32, pp. 308-313 Iida, S., Kogo, M., Sugiura, T., Mima, T., Matsuya, T., Retrospective analysis of 1502 patients with facial fractures (2001) Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg, 30, p. 28690 Brasileiro, B.F., Passeri, L.A., Epidemiological analysis of maxillofacial fractures in Brazil: A 5-year prospective study (2006) Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod, 102, pp. 28-34 Ehrenfeld, M., Prein, J., Principles of craniofacial trauma care (2012) Principles of Internal Fixation of the Craniomaxillofacial Skeleton.
