dc.descriptionThe design procedures of earth-retaining structures can be classified in empirical, semi-empirical and analytical methods. Only the last one consider the strength and stiffness of both structure and earth mass, enabling the evolutionary calculation, where efforts and displacements of the prior phases are effectively taken into account of the following phases. This paper presents a computational implementation of earth-retaining walls analysis method for both braced and cantilever walls, which is based on the Winkler model, where the soil is replaced by a sequence of springs with hysteresis and elastic-plastic behaviour. The calculations are performed according to the phases of excavation by removing actions and springs corresponding to the excavated soil and introducing the braces. The results obtained with the proposed modelling are compared with those obtained through classical analysis methods and also through other evolutionary numerical methods. © 2007 Civil-Comp Press.
