dc.description | VOC concentration in different locations in the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) in Brazil was assessed to evaluate the levels of population and environment exposure in general. The sampling was done between November 2004 and October 2005, in 12 campaigns, each lasting 12 days. The substances found in higher concentrations in all locations were toluene, m-xylene, n-hexane and ethylbenzene. In six of the eight monitored sites, toluene was the substance that had the highest average concentrations. In Santo Amaro, the highest concentration found was n-hexane at certain periods. At Sao Caetano do Sul, high concentrations of m, p-xylene were noticed, which were attributed to the presence of a bus terminal and a fuel distributor basis nearby these places, respectively. The highest concentrations of BTEX occurred in late autumn and winter, associated to more unfavorable weather conditions for pollutant dispersion.
