Fixed bed catalytic reactor have served as the workhorse of the chemical and petrochemical industries for many decades, and are still one of the most used gas-solid reactors in industry, in which heat-transfer plays an important role. A new fixed bed catalytic reactor was developed using both co- and counter-current conventional modes of refrigeration simultaneously. As case studies, the catalytic oxidation of the ethanol to acetaldehyde, the catalytic oxidation of benzene to maleic anhydride and the ethylene oxidation, were considered. These were strongly exothermic reactions, representatives of important classes of industrial processes. The potential of different cooling modes to obtain temperatures profiles with lower hot spot and minimum difference between the inlet and outlet reactor temperatures was determined. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2006 AIChE Spring Annual Meeting (Orlando, FL 4/23-27/2006).
