In the present work, the method of continued fractions at a five-channel close-coupling level of approximation is applied to study the low-energy electron-impact excitation in linear molecules. Particularly, cross sections for the X1∑g + → B1∑u +, X1∑g + → E(F)1∑g +, and X1∑g + → C1Πu transitions in H2 in the (15-40) eV energy range are reported. No orthogonality constraint between the bound and continuum orbitals is imposed in the present study and the one-electron exchange terms are explicitly considered. Comparison between our calculated cross sections with the available experimental data and other theoretical results is made. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. 574
