In the mid-frequency range, numerical methods such as the finite and boundary element methods are not suitable for structural dynamic analysis for two main reasons: mesh refinement that leads to large models and difficulty in estimating statistics for system parameter variations. Semi-analytical methods such as the spectral element method do not need mesh refinement at higher frequencies, but are very limited in the geometries and boundary conditions that can be treated. This paper develops a spectral element for thin plates reinforced with Euler beams based upon well-known theories. Two spectral formulations are shown. One of them is restricted to the simply supported case, while the other, based upon a Fourier series development, can potentially be extended to treat other boundary conditions by the use of image sources. The spectral solutions are compared with a Finite Element solution for a reinforced plate example. To address the problem of parameter variation, fuzzy arithmetic is used to predict envelope curves for the plate receptance with the spectral model.
