Previous works have presented a methodology developed to assist in the optimisation of production strategies, based on technical parameters such as the field cumulative oil production and economic parameters such as the net present value. This methodology adopts an interactive approach between the user and an expert system which was proved to be highly efficient in the case of conventional oil reservoirs under production via water flooding. The case under study here was based on an offshore reservoir where light oil was replaced by crude with 17°API (953 kg/m3) and viscosity of around 30 cP (0.03 Pa-s), which is in accordance with the concept of heavy oils for offshore reservoirs adopted by PETROBRAS. Water flooding was chosen as the Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) method, since other methods are not as yet feasible for fields under deep water. A quality map was generated and used to assist with the strategy optimisation; initial values of recovery factor were very low and the field net present value was negative for several runs; the application of the methodology was capable of achieving positive results, but the characteristic high volume of water produced increases the problem difficulty. Different economic scenarios were analysed, showing how oil price variations can strongly affect strategy performance. Some of the differences that were observed between the optimisation of this heavy oil reservoir and a conventional oil field from a previous work are the greater length and higher number of wells needed to increase the recovery factor in this case, the shorter distance between them and the need to enhance flooding by using longer injectors and higher bottom hole pressure values. The effect of considering only oil production or sweep efficiency during optimisation processes is more pronounced when dealing with heavy oil due to the higher amount of water production and lower recovery factors, and can result strategies which, despite presenting higher cumulative oil production, are not economically feasible.
