AbstractThe object of this paper is to analyze the procedures taken by the brotherhood of the Santa Casa of Misericordia concerning the distribution of dowries to young orphans of the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1808-1822. The data reveal some of the representations created by society about women and marriage. The author argues that marriage was an alternative desired by poor women - as well as by rich ones - which al/owed them to preserve honor and virtue, which were significant moral values in the colonial elite society.
