Resumen
In San Pedro, Cacha Parish, Riobamba Canton, Province of Chimborazo the effect of four levels of chamomile extract (LCE) was evaluated in the production and health performance of “pio pio” chickens under intensive production system: T1; T2; T3 and T4 (0, 2, 4 and 6 % chamomile extract), in drinking water. These treatments had four repetitions under a completely randomized design for 90 days. The results were processed using SPSS (2008) and Exel (2010) statistic software. The best results were achieved with T2 (4 % chamomile extract) in the final weight 3519.40; weigth gain of 41,41g and feed conversion of 2.37. In the same treatment nutrient intake was more efficient thus: intake of dry matter (DM), by the influence of chamomile extract was 84, 06 g/day; crude protein 16,87g/day and consumption of metabolizable energy (ME) kcal/day 211.83, so that as the level of extract is increased, the consumption of dry matter, protein and mebolizable energy increases as well. The bacterial count was reduced from 400,000 to 240, 000 cfu/g of Escherichia coli and null parasite load by using 4% CE. The highest rate of benefit was for the T2 and T4 with $ 1.24, understanding that for every dollar spent o.24 cents were obtained. In conclusion, the use of chamomile extract is an alternative for production of “pio pio” chiken.
