Resumen
The thesis work was part of the theme-hospital malnutrition: ELAN-Ecuador
performed at the Hospital "José Carrasco Arteaga" Cuenca. Azuay Province
2011. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of hospital malnutrition and
associated factors such as the socio-demographic, clinical condition surgical,
hospitalization, and quality of care factors. A cross-sectional design included 150 patients older than 18 years with hospital stay longer than 24 hours in the areas of clinical and surgery was studied. TO them two surveys were provided: Subjective Global Assessment and Hospital (SGA) Nutrition Survey. The statistical analysis was performed with the program JMP V.5.1. The average age was 51 ± 19 years (range: 18-98 years) and sex distribution slightly higher for males (57.3%). There was one (22.6%) of the presence of cancer. The hospital stay was 5 days and the average 1-day fasting. There was an average of (68%) with gastrointestinal symptoms. The study concludes that the method according to the Subjective Global Assessment prevalence was 17%, of which 2.7% are severely malnourished. The quality of care using a regular hospital survey was 28% of patients. No relation of nutritional status with gender, education, level of social integration, cancer and fast days was detected.
