The use of surge arresters on transmission lines to prevent lightning flashovers of line insulators is not a new concept. The feasibility for a widespread installation after the early 80's was allowed by the introduction of polymer-housed metal-oxide arresters in the market. The arresters can be installed on existing lines without the need for reinforcing the tower structures.
