The following research had as objective to investigate the application of archival science functions in the Federal University of Santa Catarina, developed by the Central Archive Division of the institution. Thus, the investigation approached the seven archival science functions defined by Rousseau and Couture (1998), acquisition, production, classification, evaluation, description, diffusion and conservation. It was investigated, therefore, the difficulties the archive faces in applying these functions. Moreover, it was analyzed which archival science line of thought was adopted by the professionals working in the Central Archive Division. This research becomes pertinent, since it attempt to provoke a reflection around the archival science practice, contributing to the management of the archive quantities and, therefore, to the archival science field of research. To concretize the research, it was adopted a methodology with a qualitative approach. Thus, this research is characterized as descriptive, which has adopted the study of case. In order to collect the data, observation in laboratory and interview through open questions form were applied. Having the data, it was compared with the theoretical basis, being possible conclude that: the archival science line of thought followed by the professionals working in the archive is the traditional archival science, however, it's noticed a preoccupation by these professionals about managing the entire life cycle of the files, therefore, they are changing their view to the integrated archival science; The archive adopts archival science policies, althought, these don't apply to all files in the institution. There are also difficulties in the application of the archival science functions. However, it was noticed an effort by the archive to make the archival science management of all files of the institution. But, there are financial and human resources barriers which hinder the application of archival science functions in all files of the university. Thus, it's concluded it's necessary to apply archival science policies in the whole institution. In order to do so, it's necessary, besides the work done by the Central Archive Division, the support of the highest level in the hierarchic structure of the institution. This way, the archival science quantities will come to attend with more efficiency the management of the university, will preserve the institutional memory and serve as research, culture and education source.
