Resumen
Considering the discussions on social security reform in Brazil, fiscal adjustment and the need
for sustainability of the social security system, this paper proposes to analyze the social security
systems in Brazil - Previdência Social, basically a simple pay-as-you-go model - and in Chile
– Previsión Social, initially a capitalization model, which today more resembles a mixed
system. For that, a methodological procedure was used to compare some of the relevant
elements for discussion, namely: history, concepts and characteristics of social security
systems, demographic statistics of both countries and, finally, the analysis of some
macroeconomic aggregates and other evidences in the context of social security. Finally, the
work allowed to clarify how the reform process occurred in the countries - through the analyzes
carried out, it was possible to understand the current situation of the two social security systems
and their reflection on the public finances of the governments.
