Resumen
The process of slopes destabilization are among the most frequent event related to natural
disasters, especially in urban areas occupied by settlements, slums and villages. In Natal - RN,
the occurrence of relief areas with high declivity associated with inadequate human occupation
are becoming the municipality vulnerable to slope stability problems. In this context, this study
aimed to analyze and map the risk of mass movements and to quantify the stability of slopes
adjacent to the São Jose do Jacó Community, in the Rocas neighborhood, Natal/RN. For
mapping the risk, we applied the methodology proposed by Gusmão Filho et al. (1992),
adapting the characteristics to the studied area. In order to compare and validate the results, also
we applied it to Faria’s methodology (2011), which incorporates the Hierarchy Process
Analysis (AHP) in the qualitative approach. It was also evaluated the slope stability by slope
stability analysis using Fellenius, Bishop, Janbu and Morgenstern and Price methods, with the
support of Slope/W program, produced by GeoStudio. The results of risk and hazards analysis
showed that the area studied has exhibited degree of risk between High and Very High,
representing the existence of a critical situation of risk for the resident population in Jacó,
mainly refereeing the possibility landslides incidents that can cause social, economic and
environmental damages, while the stability analysis pointed to a stable slope configuration in
all studied sections.
