Resumen
Objective: to analyze the performance of preschoolers in the task of repetition of nonwords, to characterize the most frequent type of error and to verify if the performance
is associated with the classification of the socioeconomic status (SES). Method:
Cross-sectional and analytical study with a sample of 46 preschoolers of both genders
between 4 years and 5 years and 11 months divided into two groups according to the
SES. The Phonological Short Term Memory Test was used, composed of 40 nonwords (NW) formed by the phonemes /p, m, k, f, n, t/ and divided equally into mono,
di, tri and polysyllabic. Hit was considered correct when it was produced equivalent to
the target. The errors were classified as phonemic (substitution, omission, addition)
and order (migration). Results: Preschoolers with higher SES scored better in all
extensions of NW, except for monosyllables. The most frequent type of error was the
phonemic error (substitution) for both groups, with a higher incidence in the sample
classified with less SES. There was an association between SES and overall
performance. Conclusion: All individuals had a reduced number of correct answers
as the extension of NW increased, but in preschoolers with a greater SES, this
reduction was smaller. The SES influenced memory performance and the number of
errors, with a greater number of errors being found in the group with less SES.
