Resumen
The objective of this paper is the historical study of the Dr. Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes School and Daycare Center. We aim to identify and question the historical processes that made the creation of this institution possible. To conduct the necessary research, two base questions were asked: How was the institution built? How does it contribute to the educational and non-educational community of the Massaranduba village (situated 35 kilometers from the state capital, Natal), in Rio Grande do Norte State? Such questions inspired a deep search of the cultural history – in particular considering studies conducted by Certeau – to find theoretical elements with which they could be answered. Nevertheless, as both researchers and volunteers of said institution, we aimed to retrace the story by listening to the accounts and life stories of the population of Massaranduba – such as managers, workers and students that attended the school and daycare center. Another source of relevance came from the life stories and volunteering stories of the institution. Asides from listening to the people, we aimed to build data from researched institution documents, as well as from observing its day to day workings. From those premises, we concluded that the process of building the school and daycare center constitutes a historical reference to the statement that an individual made sentient to the needs of others is capable of birthing a project that can touch people and change several aspects of the life of a vulnerable community. On the other hand, we also concluded that what was built as a community asset cannot be made private by this or that person, since all educational management requires democratic advancements in order to transform the mere handout policy into real participation, into a process where the community can take charge of its own destiny
