A socially responsive curriculum: an alternative for elt in "Popular education".

Este estudio informó sobre la investigación cualitativa que se centró en la presentación de la situación actual en la escuela de Cultura Popular en relación con el Plan de Estudios Inglés diseñado e implementado en la escuela específicamente en el grado 11. Este documento también contiene una revisión de las distintas condiciones sociales e institucionales que pueden tener un impacto en la enseñanza del idioma Inglés (ELT) en la escuela. Se llevó a cabo con 36 estudiantes de quinto ciclo en I.E.D de Cultura Popular, en Bogotá. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue re-diseñar el plan de estudios de Inglés para el grado 11, teniendo en cuenta los intereses de contexto y sociales de aprendizaje de los estudiantes para ELT incorporando en su diseño las indicaciones de la educación popular, para dar al plan de estudios de una visión social como un nuevo alternativa ELT en la escuela. Los instrumentos utilizados para la recogida de datos fueron revista del profesor, la revista de los estudiantes; representado en la elaboración de un "libro" en Inglés; y algunas pruebas documentales como P.E.I y el estudio socio-económico de los estudiantes para identificar de una manera más realista de su contexto social y cultural actual. Los resultados del estudio mostraron que la ejecución de las actividades bajo la orientación de la educación popular, los estudiantes desarrollan una posición crítica sobre su realidad social y educativa que les permita establecer sus propios objetivos en un largo y corto plazo. This study reported on qualitative research that focused on the presentation of the current situation at the school de Cultura Popular with regards to the English Curriculum designed and implemented into the school specifically in 11th grade. This paper also contains a revision of the different social and institutional conditions that may have an impact on English language teaching (ELT) at the school. It was carried out with 36 students of fifth cycle at I.E.D de Cultura Popular, in Bogotá. The main aim of this study was to re-design the English curriculum for 11th grade, considering students’ social context and learning interests for ELT by incorporating in its design the prompts of Popular Education, to give to the curriculum a social vision as a new alternative for ELT at the school. The instruments used for collecting data were teacher’s journal, students’ journal; represented in the elaboration of a “book” in English; and some documentary evidence as P.E.I and the socio-economical study of the students to identify in a more realistic way their current social and cultural context. The results of the study showed that the implementation of activities under the orientation of Popular Education, students develop a critical position about their social and educational reality that permits them to establish their own objectives in a long and short term.
