Resumen
Introduction: In last decades, there has been an increase in number of cesarean sections worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, the ideal percentage is 15%; by 2013, it was 45.5% in Colombia according to DANE. Objective: To identify the factors that influence in the occurrence of cesarean section and vaginal delivery in Colombia, with the registered information from 2017 Methods: Cross-sectional study that measures the occurrence of caesarean section and vaginal delivery for 2017 in the Colombian population registered in SISPRO database. The variables were: age, ethnicity, occurrence place, place of origin and social health insurance. RP (prevalence ratio) was calculated to establish the difference between both procedures according to the factors included in the study. Results: Cesarean section rate in Colombia for 2017 was 44.7%. Higher percentages were found in the Caribbean region, in urban areas, women with access to prepaid medicine and over 30 years of age. Conclusions: The difference between the rural and urban area, living in coastal zones, and the opportunity of going on this procedure by choice of the mother (by prepaid health services access) show the need to raise awareness about the real indications of this surgical procedure, the unnecessary complications risks and costs for health system.
